COVID – Can we help with out of code beer ?

The Brewers Association (BA) made a recent submission to congress for support for brewers as a result of the Corona virus and its impact on the craft brewing industry. The Brewers Association together with the American Beverage Licensees, Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers were appealing for congressional support for relief of the impact of Covid-19 on the craft brewing industry and its 2.1 million dependants with a contribution of $328 billion to the American economy. Read the letter here.

The Brewers Association was applying for financial relief for brewers in the form of tax credits and other financial support to keep brewers afloat in an environment where the closure of on-premise retail establishments as well as the potential closure or limited access to retail outlets during the COVID crisis all of which will have a significant impact on the financial health of most brewers. This coupled with the fact that there would be a likely backlog in distribution, delivery and handling of beer during a partial or full shut down impacting further on replenishment, stock rotation and inventory that is already at straining point.

In this submission the impact of sales, supply and production disruption would be enormous and the impact of having to withdraw out of code beer was hi-lighted as being a major risk. Out of code beer currently in the market was estimated at a value of $ 900m. According to USA Today the total annual value of craft beer in the USA stands at $114 billion per year, or $ 9.5 billion per month, this means that the potential value of out of code stock could therefore be as high as 9% of all production, a very real and serious risk to the industry.

We are all in this crisis together, the Brewshield Team and our partners John Fearless have reached out to a number of brewers during this time, to find out how we can help to survive this ordeal. We are engaging with as many brewers as we can to provide you with heavily discounted product to help with the sustainability of craft breweries and that the high quality of beer which you are used to has a better shelf life during these uncertain times.

“We are doing all we can to get product to brewers who are keeping their breweries open as long as possible, even those of you stockpiling, to plan for enforced closures or shuttered logistics all of which affects shelf life and freshness of your brew. Our professional team are there to support you and are discounting pricing in order to help in whatever way we can”

We are on standby to help in whichever way we can to get the craft industry can get through this very difficult period, read more about our science here or request a copy of our whitepaper on oxidation and shelf life here.
